Exploring the Stock Market: Understanding the fundamentals of investing and stock portfolios
This comprehensive course introduces students to the fundamentals of stock market investing and portfolio management. Students will learn essential concepts including market analysis, company valuation, risk assessment, and investment strategies. Through hands-on analysis of real companies and market data, students will develop critical thinking skills about financial decision-making and gain practical experience in stock research and evaluation.
Week by week curriculum
Week 1
Introduction to Stock Markets: Students will learn the basics of how stock markets work, key terminology, and the role of stocks in the broader economy, establishing a foundation for investment analysis.
Week 2
Company Analysis Fundamentals: This session covers how to research and analyze companies, including reading financial statements, understanding business models, and evaluating competitive advantages.
Week 3
Valuation Methods and Metrics: Students will learn various approaches to valuing stocks, including P/E ratios, growth metrics, and fundamental analysis techniques used by professional investors.
Week 4
Risk Assessment and Portfolio Theory: This week introduces concepts of investment risk, diversification, and portfolio construction, helping students understand how to balance risk and return.
Week 5
Stock Research Project: Students will conduct in-depth research on a chosen stock, applying valuation methods and analysis techniques learned in previous weeks to create their comprehensive stock analysis.

Instructor Bio
Hi! I'm David, a native Chicagoan and lifelong learner. My academic passions focus on finance and investment research, as well as studying historical companies and case studies. I'm passionate about promoting financial literacy and have published research in the Concord Review on the MaCartney Expedition, plus papers on the Dutch VOC and Direct Foreign Investments in Senegal. I have a personal interest in cars and motorcycles that often connects to my professional work - I've analyzed companies like GM and Ford and understand automotive strategy well. In my free time, I teach friends to ride motorcycles, do maintenance on my own bike, and enjoy motogymkhana racing.
